Artist Statement

Worn out of want rather than out of need, jewellery communicates.
Acting as a powerful expression of self, jewellery translates information about the wearer for all to see. This information includes opinion, ideas, critiques and commentaries. I have a desire to articulate my thoughts
and beliefs about the issues that I find important, inspiring and even infuriating. Jewellery is my outlet and medium for expression.

During my undergraduate studies at the Nova Scotia College of Art
and Design (BFA, Jewellery Design and Metalsmithing, 2000) I began to explore themes relating to feminism, gender, sexuality and love.
These themes continue to inspire and form the basis of my work today.
I have incorporated many identifiable symbols and images into my work (bathroom symbols, military badges, picket fences, Wonderbread and children's toys). I believe that creating tension through the juxtaposition of imagery, colour and meaning entices the viewer to seek an under-standing that extends beyond the symbol itself. Although my work

is very personal, it strikes a chord with people of many different backgrounds and lifestyles; there exists a common understanding of oppression, perseverance and the search for identity. Further, the process of taking personal experiences and concerns and creating work that appeals to a broad audience is both challenging and rewarding.
